The Espada had a clam-shell-esque hood.
I'm thinking that the reason for clamshell hoods is a matter of manufacturability of the (a) fenders and (b) hood, as weel as a stylistic decision based on where you want the panels gaps. If you have a hard-line near the top of the fender that contues the length of the car (like the BMW's and the C900) then why not put a panel gap there, instead of adding one to the top of the hood. Also, the way the 2002 and C900 hoods attach make them candidates for addtional metal up there. It is hard to say though, if the hard-line and hood attachment methods came before or after the clamshell design. Form followsf unction, follows form, follows function...sometimes so mush that it's not clear on which foot the designprocess started with...
