You DON'T WANT the hood to be too stiff. It needs to fold in a frontal collision so it doesn't come straight thru the windshield.
So you have to capture it at the rear corners. All the front-hinged hoods I've seen have some way of doing that. Whether it's folding contributes much to energy absorption is kinda balanced by the structure of the fenders. The structure is gonna be one place or the other. It's just a matter of where the opening seam is located & how that stuff folds up.
