News article below.
This strikes me as a good public relations move for GM, which will probably get lead stories on TV news tonight and daily newspapers tommorrow. But if the extent of the discount is "3 to 4 percent below invoice price" then it is worth less than the $2500 rebates they have been offering on trucks for some time now, and it is worth a WHOLE lot less than the now-customary $8000-10000 discounts on year end SAABs.
I hope GM moves some cars and trucks, but I don't see this doing it.
BTW it remains my opinion that GM misses out on a lot of SAAB sales by placing the MSRP so far above street price. I guess the theory behind this is "prestige," but anyone who is serious about buying a SAAB can quickly discover the true street price. But a lot of casual shoppers never get serious about SAAN because they see the list price in the 40s -- and now, for convertibles, in the 50s!! -- and they just move on. If the 9-5 Aero were just priced in the mid thirties in the first place instead of the mid-40s, they might sell a lot more of them. JMHO and I know that management does not agree.
Again, I hope they sell some cars and trucks. For GM to hurt so badly is not good for us as customers.
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - General Motors could raise the incentive to the general public in line with the discounts it offers its own employees, according to a published report.
The discounts GM is offering in June are due to be released Wednesday. The Detroit Free Press reported recently that due to continued weak sales and growing dealer inventories, the savings offers will match what GM already offers its own employees.
GM employee discounts vary by the model, but can range from 3 to 4 percent below invoice price, according to the Wall Street Journal. That would mean thousands more in savings for buyers beyond current incentives.
GM has seen falling sales and market share in recent months. Especially since Sept. 11, it has been a leader in offering attractive incentives, such as zero-interest financing and other cash-back offers, as a way of supporting sales.
But those discounts have cut into margins on the most profitable vehicles, leaving the world's No. 1 automaker to report a steep loss in the first quarter.
