cruise control and automatic transmission question

Nearly all of our vehicles are and have been equipped with manual transmissions. We have lots of long, but not too steep, hills in North Dakota, particularly west of here, and none of our manual transmission vehicles ever has any problem going up these hills in top gear (ok, maybe our VW Vanagon did).
With the few automatics we have had (including our Ford Club Wagon), the transmission seems way too quick to downshift (one or even two gears) when going up hills, which is very annoying. If I turn the cruise off, I can usually make it up these hills with the trans still in overdrive. Although the van is somewhat underpowered, I don't think this is a major factor, because my F150 has about the same engine and weight, and it does just fine cruising at 75 mph in overdrive (5th) gear.
I have never driven a Saab automatic on the highway. Those of you who have, particularly those of you who have driven manual and automatic Saabs, does the automatic stay in top gear, or does it downshift when climbing hills that the manual would climb in top gear?
Thanks.
