On my 93 900, I can cruise up to about 2000 feet elevation, (from Sea level) and stay in Drive. As long as the hill doesn't get you down below 45 MPH, the cruise on MY SAAB will maintain close to the speed desired. I can even go over Donner Summit in top gear in cruise, if the traffic is light. OTOH, My Buick Regal can't make it up the very same hill with out downshifting out of overdrive... I have never been to Dakota, so I am unfamiliar with the types of mountains or hills you have... The Rockies and the Sierras are mountains.. everything else is just a hill..
