Interesting article -- suggests GM will be putting its money ($8 billion) into product development for new/better SUVs and trucks and "luxury vehicles" as a priority (since that's where the $$ is).
What a ghastly mistake! The most fuel thirsty vehicles may become best in class at GM (if lucky) -- but as fuel prices continue to spiral up -- that segment is sure to decline. Then, GMs "cars" will be step sisters -- and not competitive.
This suggests GM just does not get that GREAT cars (and trucks, too) will draw BUYERS!
If GM has boring cars but interesting trucks -- then its a self fulfilling prophecy.
Also notes that GM is nearly a decade behind Toyota in hybrid vehicles.
Great paragraph regarding Toyota:
"Jim Press, Toyota's top North American executive, said in a recent interview, "We invested in hybrids and another company invested in a large S.U.V. manufacturer [referring to GMs 1999 Hummer deal]. You make a decision and you live with it. Gas may go back to $1.50 and hybrids may be dinosaurs and Hummers may rule the world.""
Let's hope that GM sees Saab as a "luxury vehicle" brand worth putting its production $$ against.
