Dean makes some valid points here. In the complex I'm in, some units have older pumps and you can hear them from quite a distance. We lucked out and had a 1.5 year old Carrier unit which is right outside of our bedroom. You can never hear a thing from inside, and only hear the fan run if you're right up next to it outdoors.
