First, take it to an extreme. One 55 gallon drum at 32.1 degrees fahrenheit. Another 55 gal drum at 210 degrees fahrenheit. Seal them and stick 'em in a freezer. Which one will freeze sooner?
Next, you have to consider that the hot or boiling water when placed in the freezer will evaporate at a much faster rate than the cold water. The freezer air is extremely dry and the energized (hot) water molecules will move more easily to gas (evaporate) much more readily than cold water. I think it is the reduced amount of water that actually freezes in the ice cube tray that causes this myth.
That's how I see it.
