I just sold my 88 9kT to somebody in Michigan (I'm in Ohio). We met in Ann Arbor where I signed over the title to him. He already had a plate that he attached to the car. It looked like a brand new plate (I saw him put the date stickers on it), so I don't think he had just taken it from another vehicle. This presumably means you can get a new plate in MI without having the title? Seems odd but you might want to look into that further.
Also, in Ohio you can use your plates from your old car for up to 30 days on the new car - is there a similar rule in MI?
