If you're doing a traditional resume 1-2 pages is normal, but if you're looking for something in the sciences they may want a Curriculum Vitae (CV). CV's are as long as they take, 2 pages or 20 pages, they document every relevent professional experience, publication, award or presentation you've had over the years. Mine is around 3 pages now that I'm getting done with grad school, but I've seen ones for professors that really are close to 20 pages.
Two pages is fine for a normal resume though, it's not a black or white issues IMO. Millitary experience is a BIG bonus for a lot of employers, so having room for that is worth any potential agrivation. Don't do it to list your high school activities, but you definitely have good cause.
