I use an 18" torque wrench and find I can sneak up on the 85 lbs required for wheels with the wheel in the air. The trick is to be gentle and apply the torque evenly in the cross-pattern on the lugs.. I've done this for years and it has always worked fine.
The trans seems to have enough resistance up front, the parking brake has enough in back. With an 18" wrench 85 lbs really isn't all that much pressure.
Then when it's back on the ground I just check them all again. And again after 50 to 100 miles.
