OT: Weatherproofing Pine Trim Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 5 Jul 2005 14:13:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 105-year-old house has several windows with rotting pine moldings/trim, particularly the top horizontal pieces. Naturally, this style of trim is no longer made and I have found nothing that even resembles the original. It is outrageously expensive to have a local millworks make some, so I figured out how (using table saw and router, multiple passes) and just made over 100 linear feet, pretty good copies.
Before it's installed, I want to do my best to preserve it - prior repair work has also rotted in places. I am planning on using oil-based primer on ALL SIX SIDES of every piece, followed by latex paint on the exposed sides to match the rest of the windows. Any other good ideas, i.e. would it be worthwhile to treat the pieces with linseed oil, waterproofing or something else first?
