had you not already made the trim I'd suggest milling it out of something more stable, ie cedar or hardwood.
Is it easy to figure out why the old trim rotted out? Poor water routing from gutters, mold from a spot that never gets dried out by the sun, high internal humidity (near a shower or a stove), etc?
My parents have a similar problem with some new Anderson windows (though only staining and discoloration of the wood at present) from their dogs who perpetually look out the window and drool on the lower window ledge.
Its impressive that you were about to remanufacture the trim! When replacing some baseboard molding in my house I just sneaked a piece out of an upstairs closet.
