'99 R1100RT with 58k Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Fri, 15 Jul 2005 12:24:36 In Reply to: OT. touring motorcycles, chrisx, Thu, 14 Jul 2005 21:12:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've got 58k on my '99 R1100RT. For me the RT is a serious touring bike that isn't handycapped around town or in sporting situations, that is an RT is less than 600 lbs. which is a couple of hundred pounds lighter than any other serious touring bike.
Some of my BMW buddies do some serious touring on R's, they like the wind of a minimally faired bike. Other riding buddies love their K1100RS and the big, high revving, electric motor of an inline four with it's bent over sport riding position.
I prefer the superb upright riding position and aerodynamics of the RT's, especially two up which is 90% of my riding. And I really like the sportyness of the RT chassis. I've surprised many a 600 rice rocket rider and a twisty road while two up. The luggage works well two up.
The new R1200's are nicer still, lighter, smoother, more powerful, better shifting. Love my RT but I have a hankerin' for a GS and some serious round the world touring on dirt as well as pavement. A GS is a good pavement tourer too. Our local Iron Butt king switched to a GS from a K1100RS.
If I couldn't have a BMW other candidates would be the Yamadog FJ1300, the Honda ST1300, a Kawasaki Concours if on a budget, sport tourers, no consideration given to anything with a chain like a Triumph or Ducati, no charm in a Harley, nothing as light as the BMW R bikes.
One secret of the BMW's is the totally unique and proprietary suspension set up. The tele-lever in the front is like no other front end with unmatched anti-dive qualities, and the para-lever in the back cures the shaft jacking in other shaft systems, overall the chassis is unflappagle and the pro racing Boxer Cup series shows the competence of the design.
