SAAB Rims and Tires

I recently purchased a 2002 93 and after driving a bit the dealer found that the front passenger rim was bent and both rear tires were chopped. I've been a volkswagen driver for the past 10 years and each manufacturer seems to have its problem area's. For the VW it was the ignition, coilpacks, ect.
I spoke with a local Saab owner and he told me to expect lots of problems with the rims and tires. He said that since Saab went with the newer 16" low profile tires that a good bump can damage your rims and that chopped tires are common because of the angle of the tires.
Is this at all true? What can be done to prevent chopped tires?
Also, I was told that i should get snow tires instead of all-season because it is awful in snow. Any truth?
Thanks in advance
