The new resins in particle board flooring of the past five years work much better at keeping water out. (They probably burn real good too). I've seen it be uncovered on roofs outside for the whole winter and still be good. Personally, I had an AC drain leak which got a lot of water on the unpainted particle board floor and it didn't hurt it at all.
Prior to recent innovations, I agree completely - if it gets damp it's ruined.
Most storebought shelving/furniture seems to be made of the old stuff that can't handle any moist air. Any spans, like bookshelfs tend to sag over time compared to solid directional grain wood. I avoid particle board for furniture. Pine isn't much more than particle board and much less expensive than hardwood. Plywood is good inside cupboards, drawers, etc where seasonal swelling could cause problems.
