particle board will swell a bit but MDF(medium Density Fiberboard) will swell much more. Cheaper kitchen cabinets use this stuff with a veneer over it. you can tell at the sides what it is. this stuff will swell like crazy.
Even Work benches will use MDF tops(very thick version) and it takes about 6-8 coats of Poly to get it to seal. If you seal that stuff well, it still has the ability to swell if you put a swaety glass on it for a period of time.
Long story short...Ari hits it. Stronger glue puts the joint force on the MDF or particle board, Bad idea. There are non intruvie ways to strngthen this stuff, but maybe for the price IKEA charges, it might not be worth the work. Biscuit joints might be able to replace the dowels in some spots spreading the load over a larger area but it'll find the weakest part and loosen there.
Slight rant: I have noticed even on expensive furniture how oftens joints are cheated. Pottery barn furniture is a great example.(Not that this is high end but...) They tack corners with brads where a dove tail would be some much stronger, or even a box joint.
I just get the pottery barn catalog, wife picks out what she wants and I build it. That way I know its done right.
