I'll probably get jumped on for this again, however, you also give up lateral traction in a generally steady state throttle situtation due to the greater weight of the AWD system. Now it is also true you can get power down while cornering and can be much more aggressive with the throttle.
At one time there may have also been a slight advantage with the better awd systems ability to quickly modulate power to the various wheels under even moderate acceleration serving as sort of a limited stability control system (mostly forgiving bad throttle imputs). However, that has been more than offset by modern stabilty control systems available on many types of cars.
Don't get me wrong; a would still consider a good AWD in snow/ice country advantageous. I'd welcome it in a vehicle like the coming SportCombi. However, I can go either way.
