I drove a 1990 stick shift Camry for years in Boston traffic and never had any trouble. The hydraulic clutch feel was very similar to the Saab clutches (a late 9000, '01 9-3, and a 9-3SS) that I've tried. The gear shift was very notchy with long throws.
What I would do is sit in neutral (no clutch) when not moving, use the clutch & 1st to creep, and sit in 2nd (with occasional clutch to prevent the enging from lurching) when the traffic moved a little. 2nd on that car was good til 40 mph or so I avoided 3rd unless I was on clearer roads. I don't recall ever getting fatigued unless it was a looong traffic jam, maybe an hour or more. I guess part of the trick is to let some space open up in front of you so you don't have to shift as often.
