Finding Out If Tires are Old and Hard

How can I tell if a tire I want to buy is gone hard from being old? I am shopping for new tires and read with interest a post about tires from someone who had been to the SAAB Aero driving school. The post said that they test drove SAABs with different tires and, basically, cheaper tires that are new beat expensive tires that are hardened with age. So if I'm shopping tires, how can I check to determine if they have gone hard? Which leads to the second question, how long can I expect to have tires on my car before they harden?
