When a vehicle is imported for personal use when moving to the US, if it is sold before 12 months, this is considered a federal crime aka smuggling.
When the vehicle was imported, there were forms completed at the time of border crossing. Cannot register without that proof/documentation of legal entry. If that was not done, the paper work might be possible to do at a US Government Customs office in CA. If not, it probably has to back to Canada. The import paper work is a small fee and a multi page form. Takes about 15 minutes to do at time of entry when moving.
When folks run the VIN they do not know what to do. State computers may reject as an impossble code... not knowing what to do with the country code.
The used car folks use software to evaluate the used car options and worth, again, no hits. I had no problem with insurance.
Plates are no problem and when registered, you get new ones. Might be best to first get US driver's licence before registation. Need insurance with a replacement vehicle, so perhaps best to have that done before. Length of time that one can drive on out of state/country plates varies by state. But as long as the Canadian plates have not expired, it is a fuzzy situation.
