printer question, PCL5 VS PostScript

Having gone through an HP laser printer install that did not go well...
Is it possible to have PCL and PS drivers on the same printer at once, or do HP PCL/PS drivers contain both in any case? The driver downloads are almost the same size. The tech support folks on the phone were helpful, but did not know how to reply to this question. I have never had to worry about such things before as when something works well all of the time, one rarely cares.
and... Printer RAM: How much does one need and how does one know? Have not seen any useful discussion of that. Again, never needed to care.
(LaserJet 1320nw, compact laser, fast, afforable, built in full duplex, network interface is wireless or ethernet (one at a time), also 1320dn, 1320, 1320n, V2.0 install CD seems to have bogus drivers, PCL6 is too fragile to be considered useable)
