I have DL'd and installed new drivers for PCL5e, PCL6 and postscript.
I have all three setup as different logical printers, all going to the same LJ1320nw printer.
All of the problems reported earlier with PCL-XL errors and postscript not working seemed to be fixed. (PCL-XL is just another term for PCL-6)
So it seems that the drivers on the install CD were somewhat bogus. And the software provided to check for new software and drivers did not detect the newer drivers at HP.com! But some of this may be related to the pre-existing LJ3200 drivers.
First go-around with HP techsupport was to install PCL5e from the install CD to replace PCL6. That fixed the total PCL6/PCL-XL errors, but then postscript printing from .pdf's or printing checks or invoices all lost graphics. DL and install of new postscript fixed just about everything. There are subtle changes to quality of images embedded in .pdf's with the various drivers and no obvious differencs with line art graphics.
The duplex printing is going to be very valuable. This feature in a good mono laser printer is probably the best price point in the market. The wireless feature means the printer works wherever I put it. There are duplex color printers, but their mono pages per minute can suck, cost per page for toner is high as the toner cartiges are small, and the text quality of color laser printers is usually not great. This printer is also very compact! Color laser printers are often 600DPI. Good mono printers are typically 1200DPI.
Some software packages that print business forms etc specify that the printer used must be 100% HP compatable. So choice of brand is an important consideration. If printing laser checks one also has to choose a printer that has MICR toner cartidges available. MICR = magnetic ink character recongition Swapping between regular toner cartridges and MICR is not much fun.
