and the printer has a processor that interprets the data stream coming out of the computer. Many modern printers can handle both PCL and PostScript. It's also OK to have both PCL and PostScript drivers on your computer, but you'll get a smoother ride if you use just one for a given printer.
Either flavor of driver can become corrupted, even when new, so a reinstall is the best solution. It sounds like you have a PC (as opposed to a Mac) so uninstalling can be a PITA. Others here will be able to help. I'm Mac-only.
As TG notes, PostScript (from Adobe) is best for graphics work, and seems to be generally less troublesome than PCL (which is a page description language developed by HP).
As for RAM, most printers come with enough for most needs. If you do big graphics you need more printer RAM, but the printer can share the processing load with the computer's memory, so lots of printer RAM is not essential for most users. Consider that a $100 inkjet printer doesn't have much RAM but can process a 20 MB photo. It just does it slowly bcz it's working off the computer's RAM.
