Although the western end of I-90 is not very scenic, the I-86/I-88 route is one of the most desolate stretches of expressway I have ever driven. Assuming you will need convenient access to fuel and food, take the Thru-way.
I drove from Erie, PA to Ithaca, NY on I-86 back in the Fall of 1999, was called Route 17 then IIRC. Not a single gas station or food establishment open after 8:00pm during the entire drive, and not many could be spotted for possible day-time service either. I was very glad I had re-fueled in Erie eventhough I had over 1/2 a tank remaining!
