(Didn't know about the resampling at 10% increments and makes sense, thanks)
I was speaking to a friend of mine last year who does digital photography for a living. He's got a Nikon, a Real Expensive one. Looking at his pictures and at mine taken with an Olympus c4000Z (roughly ~$300 when new, 4 MP), it was pretty clear (npi) that not only were his shots clearer than mine, but they had more subtle shading. For example, pictures of clouds on an overcast day from my camera, while properly exposed, tended to just show a slate gray sky. While his showed the beautiful detail in the gradations of gray you see with the naked eye.
When pressed on this specific quality, which I feel really separates a technical good pic from a really 'live' one, he felt that while the spec of numbers of pixels was important, equally important was the actual, physical size of the CCD.
