Thanks for all of the suggestions. Again, SaabNet comes to the rescue.
I wanted to be thorough in solving this problem and the best way I could imagine was to dig out the affected dirt, as per Rick D's suggestion. I even called my local volunteer fire department (a really great organization, BTW) for advice and they said that it would evaporate and turning the soil would help. The burn-off idea would be something to see, but considering that there is a stand of Douglas Fir trees right next to the spot, and the summer fire ban was just lifted, I don't think it would have been a good idea. I live in the foothills near Boulder, Colorado.
So, I spent about 3.5 hours this morning digging a hole about 10 inches deep and 3 feet in diameter. It was hard-packed rock/dirt mix. I'm going to be sore tomorrow. I'll let the hole dry out for a day and then fill it in tomorrow.
