OT, Advice on Home stereo system

Hey guys... I actually asked about this subject maybe a year ago, about a stereo for my family....well they got distracted, and it didn't happen, but now it is gonna happen hehe...
We have decided to go for a simple stereo 2 channel system, as we want it for 99.9% music, and 0.1% TV. I know you can't beat a high quality 2 channel stereo system for music. Budget is ~$1000 for receiver, cd plater, and 2 floor speakers.
I know opinions are numerous when it comes to audio, and I will listen at a store to all of the suggestions from my thread over a year ago...
My questions now are:
For floor speakers, how low of a frequency should they go to, so that I won't need a subwoofer for a good low end? I know they will never get down into the 20's. But, say, would a set of floor speakers with a range of 35Hz to 20Khz be ok? I don't listen to rap, but still want a decent low end, especially for live recordings. Been looking at speakers from a pair of Infinity Primus 360s at $539 a pair, to some Polk Rti10's at like $850 a pair.
I ask because some receivers I am considering do not have a sub output. I really like what I hear about the Onkyo tx-8511, 2X100, seems built well...but no sub out. Have also heard about (but not yet heard) stuff from Denon, NAD, etc. How is Harmon Kardon as far as quality? I'm leaning towards Onkyo because of their reputation for reliablity.
Thanks for any info guys. :)
