No levee is strong enough, because you can't defy nature forever. We need to learn humility and respect for nature from this incident.
And it's not about the money. The US government will be giving away in excess of $100 billion to underinsured property owners. It's a dumb policy, but it's a political reality, and the fact is, we can afford it. So it's not about the money. It's about learning not to build where we have no business building.
If we give away $100 billion and condemn the place, that will be the best outcome. If we give away the $100 billion, then beef up the levee and let those people move back, then we are fools. There will be another hurricane.
BTW, how long do you think it will take for the surviving insurance companies to double everyone's premium?
