Many of these people are entirely down-and-out...and mainly have lived their lives this way from an entire societal perspective. NOLA is a city of significant poverty in certain and numerous parts of the city. These people did not have the means to leave...insight, notice, money, wherewithall...to know that they had the potential to lose everything. They have very little to begin with and very little to go on. Many of these poor souls ended up in the Superdome.
The looting is a matter of survival for some. Others do it for reasons I can't comprehend -- it's their right, privilege or they simply don't know any better. I support people finding food to sustain their lives in a horrific circumstance -- and that's what this is. The looting and shooting for personal gain or whatever it is is simply unconscionable.
We all need to send the most positive thoughts and whatever influence we can to the folks influenced by this horrible tragedy.
