From our map the other day, it appears that I'm closer to N.O. than most of you (12 hour drive when the roads are dry), so I thought you might like to know what's going on nearby.
Most colleges in Oklahoma (including the one where I profess) and Texas are taking college students from the hurricane area no questions asked. Late enrollment? No problem. No transcripts? Send them later. Out of state? No reason to pay those hefty fees. Need a dorm? We'll make room. If you know of students in the area, tell them to look to nearby states to keep their education going.
The students on campus today had a $1 drive for Red Cross. Even college students have a dollar. Collectivly, they should get close to $2000 from our small campus.
Churches in the area are sending their vans to Houston to pick up people, setting up mini-shelters in church gyms and basements.
For those who drove out early, hotels in the area are making exceptions to such things as no-pet rules.
The golf coast response may have been botched, but you get out a little and you find a lot of good people and institutions doing what they can to help out, day to day, on a small scale. That's the news we don't hear on CNN.
