I would use pure tung oil. This has no driers that are actually toxic metal compounds. This treatment is safe for food contact as it is only a vegi oil. But it sets up hard. You rub it into the surface and let soak for 10-15 minutes then wipe off all surface oil*. Let it cure out for a day or two and repeat a few times, depending on the nature of the wood. Use some mineral spirit paint thinner to make it soak in better. You will build up an oil finish in the wood, not be creating a surface over-layer. It is eazy to retreat over time for maintenance. http://www.leevalley.com sells it. There may be other or better sources, but this is who I use.
In the URL not the Tech and Intr links near the product listings.
*You do not want to have a surface build up!
