Rita evacuation story... and Viggen overheating problem

Good evening, friends,
People in the Galveston and southeast Houston areas of Texas are SERIOUSLY evacuating to get out of the path of Rita, now a category 5 storm with 165 mph sustained winds.
I just drove from the plant where I work (in the Bayport industrial complex southeast of Houston, elevation 12 feet) about 45 miles to my home in Sugar Land. It took me over 4 hours of stop and go, mostly in first gear.
I have never seen such traffic in my life. Not even Taipei traffic (worst I've seen) is like Beltway 8 was this evening!
So, I parked the car for 30 minutes at Kroger, then drove the remaining 2 miles home. There is no bread left in Kroger, no flashlights or batteries, no bottled water. But I got some chips and apples and a big box of zip-loc bags which I will fill with tap water before the storm comes. And Twinkies, they had Twinkies.
I drove home 2 miles, picked up my son and headed for the cash machine. Soon the car was chiming and I noticed the temp gauge almost to the red. Then into the red.
Turning off the AC and cranking the heat up to max got the temp gauge down, first just under the red and then to the normal position. I skipped the ATM and drove straight home.
When I parked the car, I opened the hood and discovered, as I suspected, that the radiator fan wasn't running.
Did the four hour stop-and-go drive cause the fan problem? Is the fan now busted, or will it start running again later? Am I just really REALLY lucky that the problem didn't manifest itself during the 4 hour drive?
And isn't it a good thing I'm planning to ride out the storm in Sugar Land (a good ways inland) instead of driving another 12 hours stop and go to San Antonio?
I'm curious about your opinions about the overheating. And if you are inclined toward prayer, I invite your prayers for all of us in Rita's path.
Best regards,
Dave
