Tom,
I remember NYC roads being worse a couple years back. I think the 311 system had more people reporting repairs that's needed. I have seen a lot more patch repairs this past winter and this summer compared to anytime before. But, still it's not even close compared to CA or even upstate or Long Island.

To those ones that you mention, I'm sure there's no solution drivers can prepare for. I have a Viggen and I just got new wheels. Oh my gosh, I can't believe I've waited for so long to do that. My viggen wheels were completely spent after a year and a half of driving in NYC. Saying they are Egg-shape is understatement. NYC roads are absolutely horrible. I drive with confidence only on the roads I travel regularly. Otherwise, I'm really on my toes on the accelerator.

In fact, I went to 16 inch from 17 inch Viggen wheels and really really really happy with the ride. Much more civilized than 17 inch. Maybe if I move to suburb, I'll go back to 17 inch. I haven't felt the turns were any less fun with 16's than 17's, yet ;-) Also, I went from 225 to 205 width and the handling got a lot lighter resulting in better maneuverability (?) for quick responses. I like current set up with sway bar a lot better than with 17 and without sway bar. If you don't mind, you should consider 16's.

Anyways, good luck with NYC roads. Sorry for the long post, I just went through a lot of headache and money because of them. But, the result is so fantastic I'd recommend to any NYC drivers to go down with their wheels.
