this rankled my bones the same way our vacant, B.S. HR, PR, management, and marketing spin doctors quip "It's not a bug, its a feature." ;)
to me, this sounded alot like the internal dialogue "I dont want to pay to fix his car, I (or the g/f) hit him, but let's figure out some way to make the saab guy look bad publicly and feel personally guilty." AND get other people to "pay" for it in the form of donations.
As me dad would have said: "H.S."
if I was the saab guy, Id have cashed that check immediately and taken the saab in. if I was also a lawyer, I would have sued them for defamation of character for calling me an a5-hole on the website as well.
