The grief I put my poor parents through when I turned 16 was unbelievable.
Within a month of getting my license, I rammed a curb while playing with the car in the snow, blowing out both tires. A week later, I was driving way to fast down a windy road and flipped the car into the woods, causing $6,000 of damage and nearly killing myself (whoops)
Within 2 years of getting a license, I had been to court twice for reckless driving and had over 12 speeding tickets.
It's been about 7 years since all that; I've slowed down quite a bit :) I only average a speeding ticket once every 2 years now, and that is usually on the highway for the normal culprit - 80 in a 65 or something similar.
Stupid, I know it was only 7 years ago - but my whole perspective on mortality has definitely changed since then. I can really understand now when adults say kids think they are indestructible - they really do. I definitely did. I can't believe I have been so lucky to never have seroiusly injured myself - it wasn't just driving, it was climbing buildings with friends, mountain biking like crazy, skiing off huge rocks, everythign was always extreme.
Once, I remember rappelling off a 80' bridge in CT with a lane-line rope we stole from a swimming pool (nylon) and using a keychain carabiner with a rope harness to do it. That wasn't the brightest thing anyway :)
Good luck with your ding - seems to me that $1600 is a lot. I would expect just sheet metal damage as you describe it to run $800- $1000. You'd be really, really surprised the variances you can get in pricing from different dealers. I had a small ding on a car once and I went to the dealership, they wanted $1300, and then I went to an indy, he charged me only $450 and did a fantastic job.
