The 9-5 has a very good reliability record tho, as with any car, there are areas that need improvement. Look for an Aero MY 2002+ as many upgrades were made in '02 (seats, suspension, etc.) Anedotally the MY '03 seems to be a favorite as Saab did some decontenting on '04. I have an '04 and love it tho I miss the Weather Band and heated rear seats a friend has with his '03.
I also have a manual trans (rare). The Auto trans does seem to vibrate a bit at idle... maybe that's what you felt? It's not a problem just a quirk it seems. No idle vibrations with the manual, but good luck finding one. The Arc is made to resemble a large Eurosedan in handling hence the softer ride.
If you're a spirited driver the Aero's for you. Change the oil often, visit this board for DIY tips, keep an eye out for Smokey (you'll need to in an Aero, the temptation for speed is just too great) and you should be fine. Others will chime in I'm sure. Good Luck!
