there was an article in one of the hotrod mags (or maybe it was one of the pop techonolgy mags) about a fellow who put solenoid-actuated valves in his VW Beetle. It must have has some fairly sophisticated electronics running the thing considering when it was done. The article said that his programming matched cam timing to engine speed to maximize torque produced at any RPM.
It's not a new idea, but it's good to hear that it's being reconsidered. Who knows, maybe the guy who put it in his beetle patented it and its time ran out.
