The link between caffeine and long-term hypertension is not proven in all cases. Caffeine undoubtedly raises blood pressure in the short term, although there is little data on the effects of long-term regular caffeine consumption. Additionally, there are small to medium scale studies correlating long-term hypertension and caffeine consumption in men.
However, a study came out in the Journal of the American Medical Association earlier this week that followed 155,000 female nurses over a period of 12 years that suggests coffee intake does not correlate with increased hypertension. There is actually a slight trend suggesting that high levels of coffee consumption decrease the risk of long-term hypertension. Interestingly, the study also found that caffeine consumption in the form of cola (both diet and regular) did correlate with increased risk of hypertension. Thus, the source of caffeine may play a role, in addition to gender.
Essentially, it's very good news for a female grad student like myself who drinks a fair amount of coffee :)
