We are redoing our kitchen so I just looked at a bunch of flooring samples and talked with some flooring tradesmen. There are many, many different versions of bamboo floors, some are quite hard, others you can permanently scar with your thumbnail. One thing about all the bamboo that I saw is that the planks come prefinished, and most of the floor guys said that prefinished is not the way to go in a kitchen - you want to be able to create a sealed surface, which requires finishing with several coats of polyurethane, planks already in place.
So, what did we decide on? We are going to try to salvage the century-old maple floor that is already there, the scars and stains add some "interest" and "character", and the quality of the old wood is rare today, i.e. 10 - 12 foot long planks.
