Here is a <<product>>: how well does it do what it is meant to do? What is good/bad about it? And since it is a durable good, how does it hold up over time?
With these as guidelines, they can't help but be pretty pragmatic in their reviews. And since they regard perfect reliability as the holy grail, they set the bar very high. The Japanese makes have done a lot to set this bar. Sometimes I think Japanese cars should be graded on one scale and the rest of the world on another. But there is no reason at all why all cars can't be as reliable as the better Japanese makes, even if they can be fun to drive.
Of course, car magazines seem to be equally biased towards certain makes (such as BMW) and also don't provide the best info either. And car mags tend to be overly subjective, just as CR is overly objective.
