Lack of perceived value & reliability by U.S. consumers

I believe it all boils down to perceived value. The brands you named have a reputation for quality & reliability, and Saab, unfortunately, does not.
Saab once had the market cornered on reputation for safety but I think Volvo has taken that claim to fame away from us.
I dunno. Being an educated consumer, I continue to see Saabs as the best used deal you can get. I tell everyone Saabs are a great used deal. And it was this same insane amount of depreciation which allowed me to afford my first (used) Saab. And I now drive a car that I paid $12K for, which looks like a new $35K car (thanks, Saab, for rarely updating your designs!).
Not everybody is as loyal or educated a consumer as many of us at Saabnetters are, so you can't really expect them to have the same perceptions of quality and reliability, especially when GM is on its financial knees.
