results of the 9-3SS over prior Saabs are a result of marketing or in fact might it just have a far stronger safety cage, with six airbags in side the safety cage, and all of the forgoing inside the improved crush zones. Also, the SS is far more nimble, aided by std anti-lock and std vehicle stability not available on older versions, meaning it has more ability avoid accidents in first place. IIHS has real world statistics as well from crash and insurance results from around the country. Those latter data are skewed somewhat, some would argue, by the demographic that may buy certain vehicles. Sweden has stats too; but, their small cars are not getting whacked very frequently by yahoo's in a 7000 lb, jacked up, 4 wheel drive macho symbol. Many safer drivers may indeed buy Volvos and Saabs for their historic toughness, etc., and thereby skewing the "real" world experience stats by having a population of drivers that have fewer, and perhaps less severe, accidents than those who are drawn to other vehicles. The tests are a uniform reference point, and virtually identical to some of the tests being used in Europe. Which would you rather be in, the 93-SS, or an older 900 that might well collapse under the same impact?
