ducking the 3rd party ink competition.
Ink cartridges costs HP about 25-50 cents to make, including ink, cartridge, packing, etc. They are really in the ink biz. Same goes for Epson, Lexmark, etc. It's partly why their printers can be sold so cheaply--the razor and razor blade model. Of course they all put a huge amount of R&D into their inks. I've been through HP's labs and it's pretty impressive, and that is part of what you pay for with a name-brand ink.

Still, this makes ink their cash cow and they protect the cow by making anyone else's cow not work so well.

But on the other hand, and depending on what you use your printer for, is is not necessarily cheaper to buy 3rd party inks. I've found they don't last as long, clog or misfire sooner, don't clean as well, are not color accurate, and in the case of an Epson, actually killed a print head. On a Lexmark the 3rd party inks would rarely run out... the print heads just stopped working and wouldn't clean correctly. Also, if you're using them for photos you plan to keep, the Brand X inks probably won't last as long. Even Consumer Reports says the OEM inks are better, and a better value overall. For black text only the off-brand inks are fine, but the colored pigments and dyes make the color inks a bit of a problem.

I don't work for any of these companies, but I do a lot of consulting and writing on all types of digital printing and this is a common issue with inkjets.
