definitely the chicken Posted by Camm [Email] (#191) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Camm) on Wed, 14 Dec 2005 15:39:13 In Reply to: Of my 4 900's, one is a "beater", couch tour [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 14 Dec 2005 12:52:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently parted ways with an 87 VW QSW: it had a t boned door, a bumper held on with drywall screws, faded paint, rust, you name it - although it ran insanely well, it was a capital B Beater. I was never an actively bad driver, but I definitely took chances with it that I wouldnt with my 99 9-3, or even my (pretty beat, but much loved) 83 900T. For example, if I was in the right and some yahoo tried cutting me off, I'd stay where I was and hold my ground - the risk calculation is just different. If some A-H in an $50,000 X5 wanted to go bumper to bumper with my $150 clunker, I was willing to oblige them.
Another example - there is a traffic light in downtown Albany that people coming from a certain direction tend to run after it changes - because of the geometry of the intersection, sometimes 5 and 6 cars end up cruising through after it turns red. People coming the other direction also get a short green. It always burned my a$$ to be first in line at the green but have to sit and watch the parade of cheaters. In the QSW, I'd occasionally go as soon as my light turned green. In my 9-3, I sit and watch and contemplate my accident-less insurance rates.
The correlation between the age and maturity of the beater driver probably plays a role too. I was ~22 when I was driving the QSW, I like to think I'm a bit more mature now.
