OT - advice for dealing w/ dealer shenanigans (longish) Posted by Camm [Email] (#191) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Camm) on Mon, 2 Jan 2006 17:18:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The History:
My mother's 01 Caddy STS recently went into the local Chevy dealer to have the ABS looked at (dry-land activation). The dealer is where the car was bought, and for the most part has been maintained and fixed, 99% of which has been under extended warranty. While at the dealer this time, Mom was told that she needed a new battery, the old one wasnt holding a charge (a claim *not* supported by my observations) When she told them she'd think about it, the next day the diagnosis was changed to "the battery has completely died while the car was in, and needs to be jumped just to be driven" and that we needed the OE AcDelco battery which with installation would be $234. The local NAPA had the same battery for $110, which I picked up that day.
The dealer called this AM to let Mom know the ABS stuff was done, and to see what we were going to do regarding the battery. She told them that we got one on our own, planing to pop it in the either their parking lot, or back at out house, however, they said basically "great, bring it over" We arrive at the dealer, and give them the battery. 5 minutes later we are told that the Napa is too tall, doesnt fit, and we have to go with the AcDelco. So we do. Mom gets the car home, and out of curiosity, I pop the back seat to see (and measure) the new battery. It is 1/2" larger in every dimension than the Napa. I pop the Napa battery in just to see - not only does the Napa fit perfectly, it has a higher CA and CCA rating too.
The problem - In my imagination, I march in there, slam the AcDelco on the counter and demand Mom's money back, and make a scene and a half.
If it were my car, I could understand the local Saab dealer balking at installing some scanwest parts I got from Eeuroparts or whereever, but that wasnt really the case here, my Mom didnt make the service appointment to have the battery changed - this was something they threw at her. We didnt ask them to do a cob-job and put some off brand, or incorrect part in. If they *wouldnt* do it, shouldnt they have said so? The fact that they supposedly tried, but said it "wouldnt fit" burns me...
The question:
Has anyone else dealt with a situation like this? How did you resolve it? Did you ever patronize that dealer again? If so, how did it play out?
Thanks much,
CW
