Melbourne right (left) turns........ Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 3 Jan 2006 18:36:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I learned a new way to make a turn across traffic. In Melbourne Australia they have trolley tracks in the streets and you can't wait in the middle of the street to make a turn across traffic which is a right in Melbourne as they drive on the "corrrect" side of the road. You have to pull almost to the curb on the left in a (sometimes) designated waiting lane and wait for the traffic and trolleys to clear and then pull across the entire road to complete your right turn.
The other unique turn is a Turkish left turn. On a conventional right side of the road (vs "correct" side of the road English/Australian/Japanese) as you approach your left turn you cross over the centerline and pull on to the oncoming shoulder against traffic several hundred feet or meters before your left turn and then complete your left turn from the left shoulder when you come to it. This can be very disconcerting when someone does this coming at you!
