This is a page of information you are looking at now. It counts as 1 page downloaded. However, there are many elements of data that make up the page and each is logged in the web log as a 'hit'. There is the Saabnet.com logo, the page text itself, perhaps a member icon, country icon, and embedded image, navigation bar image, and 5 button ads. That would be 1 page with 11 hits. You can see how a graphics intense site could have a low page count but high hit count and conversely, Saabnet.com generally has a much higher page to hit ratio than most sites since it lacks all the avatars and flashing embedded graphics in posts etc.
Users is another stat that gets mentioned but is harder to track unless a site requires registration to use in which case you know exactly how many users you have. Most sites (and ad brokers) use unique IP addresses as a general user count however it is inaccurate. Many companies and ISPs, like AOL, use proxy servers to access the web, so many people come from the same IP address and get counted as a single person. Conversely, a dial up user who gets a different IP address each time she dials into the Internet would be counted as multiple people. We use a NAT router at home, so both Elle and I have the same IP and would be counted as 1 person and I think more and more, people are using NAT routers to network their homes with multiple computers.
fwiw,
-Scott
