I've got two NEC multisync 2080ux at my desk (20 inch) using DVI at 1600x1200 each. They are nice, but expensive. Other desks and friends have Samsung, IIyama, and Viewsonic LCDs which are good - make sure to go for DVI.
I have a Nvidia Quadro4 980 XGL video card at work (linux) with dual DVI which rocks for what I use it for. (text, xwindows, web browser, saabnet).
At home, (windows XP) I have a Sony 19" gdm400 CRT at 1600x1200 with a matrox parhelia video card. The monitors about 5 years old now and still works great. I use it for managing and editing photos (nikonview, capture, photoshop). I noted when I upgraded computers, the video card makes a HUGE difference when using a CRT at 1600x1200. A lesser video card just doesn't make a clean enough super high res signal.
