You could get data from the gas company such as therm usage (how much gas was used) for the billing period, the number of days in the billing period, and the heating degree days (from them or the weather service). With these, you can look into average usage per day in terms of therms, then multiply with the current therm cost and find the number. Adjust as needed for colder weather via heating degree days value.
In our case (Indianapolis), when the local gas company raised the rate by 45% from last year, all bets are off. We were able to save 33% by using MUCH cheaper to run electric radiators, but with a 45% rate hike the gas company won at the end.
